New Rebelle Papers Released: Felt, Archival Color and Washi Mitsumata

A- | A+

Three stunning new sets of full-color papers for Rebelle are now available! We're introducing new digital papers with surfaces crafted from felt, a material traditionally used by textile artists. Another set, Archival color papers, brings back the popular monochrome trio in full color. Additionally, the new fan-favorite Washi papers are out, featuring Japanese Mitsumata plant fibers and fragments of tea leaves. Each set contains three unique papers, ideal for colored inks, gouache, watercolor, pencil, pasty oil, pastel, or charcoal artworks.

Felt Papers

Felt is a traditional material of textile artists. It is used to create surface and spatial works. It can be used for creating an abstract decoration, an original hat, or a ladies' handbag. We at Escape Motions have tried to approach felt unconventionally. Together with the textile artist Martin Kratochvil, we tried to create thin felt surfaces on which you could paint or draw. From a large number of different experiments with felt, we have selected the three most interesting. The first is a traditional lumpy felt surface, which was created by manual production of felt and subsequent gradual drying. The second, as if vertically combed surface contains finely woven threads that soften the visual impression. The third, softest surface, has tiny pieces of colored cotton in it, floating clouds in a sea of felt fibers.

Obviously, it is not possible to draw on a soft felt in the real world. However, this restriction does not apply to Rebelle, so you can comfortably draw on these with dry or wet media. The felt surface is particularly advantageous for painting with colored ink, watercolor, and gouache. The nature of the color spot is very specific, don't hesitate to try something new!EX43 Mix Media on Felt PaperEX44 Gouache on Felt Paper

Archival Color Papers

The new Archival Color pack is a return to the successful trio of monochrome papers, which we have completely reworked into a full-color version. From the authentic physical originals from the first half of the twentieth century and used in natural history museums, we created a new version significantly more respectful of the original model down to the NanoPixel level.

Papers can still be dyed to one shade, but at the same time, different color nuances of the paper are preserved. Ultimately, these are new papers that allow you to draw with pencil, charcoal, or pastel. They are excellent for impasto oil painting and fine watercolor painting. The combination of various painting and drawing techniques also stands out with them. Just start experimenting!EX46 Pencil on Archival Color Paper

Washi Mitsumata Tea Papers

Japanese papers are always very specific. The new set called Mitsumata Tea presents a combination of the bark of the luxurious Japanese Mitsumata plant and larger and smaller fragments of tea leaves. In the first surface, they are almost imperceptible in mass, in the second you will find them as small pieces, and in the third, they are a distinct characteristic of the surface.

Real Mitsumata is very fine and clumps into characteristic puffs of paper pulp. In reality, Mitsumata paper is produced by hand pumping using bamboo sieves and left to dry in the sun. In our digital processing, we tried to preserve its visual specifics. You can draw on Mitsumata with pencil, ink, and pastel. The watercolor painting blends beautifully into this paper, while all the details of the material are preserved. They are ideal for Sumi-e painting.WM04 Sumi-e on Mitsumata Tea Paper

Updates to Existing Papers

We have made updates to some existing papers, specifically to Cold-Pressed Typography papers which now contain a new detail map. The original map was too strong, so we have adjusted the values to make it more realistic. If you own these papers, just download the Rebelle 7.2.2 update to load these changes for the papers.

In the Lokta Rough pack, the tiling of the "EX41 Lokta Rough" paper has been updated. To load these changes, download the Rebelle 7.2.2 update + re-download the Lokta Rough paper set from your Community account, and import it to Rebelle.

How We Create Papers for Rebelle

The ultra-realistic papers are an absolute gem. When creating papers, we look for a suitable contrast in texture to capture the characteristics of the fibers, which creates a unique paper structure every time. Papers are not a simple copy of reality. They are new textured images created with respect to the original pattern and behave realistically like real papers while painting in the Rebelle.

The new paper sets, along with the rest, are available on our website starting at USD 9.99 each. Each set contains three different papers.

We wish you lots of creative ideas!
Your Escape Motions Team
