Hi Escape Motions!

I appreciate the team's continuous efforts in upgrading and improving the software and tools.

I wish we could push the thick paint effect even further though, as it still feels lacking. I know it's possible to achieve more with custom brushes, but you still can't really go THICK thick. Like caking on and building up the paint, without the brush flattening it with the strokes.

I think a Paint Tube tool would be an amazing addition to Rebelle. Using or "squeezing" the tube tool could produce thick globs of paint of various shapes that can build up on each other without the flattening effect. The paint could then get "pushed" around with existing brushes or the blend tool, like it would happen with real paints.

I don't know if it'd be difficult to achieve this, but since we literally have live watercolour simulation, I'd hope it's not! I also don't know if this is already on your radar for the future. I'm already obsessed with Rebelle but this would send me over the moon.

Nothing against your wish, we still can dream :)

But I think it's pretty unlikely that there will be something like
that in Rebelle. Although many users would like something like that.

I see technical reasons that stand in the way of that. Because technically
speaking, you're in the area of 3D sculpting programs with something like that.
Which work in a slightly different way than digital painting programs like Rebelle.

Here are a Video from "Anton Tenitsky" sculpting in 3D-Coat.

You could try it yourself with the online version
of Nomad Sculpt, a 3D sculpting app for the iPad.

Here's the link.

Maybe if we had a way to export the art into blender then sculpt the thick paint over the artwork and import it again in Rebelle.

Thanks for responding @2dpainter @lolozori

I'll look into those resources, but wanted to highlight that Artrage has a Paint Tube tool already, it just doesn't look that great imo. Screenshot below is from the demo.

Even though it's called a Paint Tube, it's essentially just a brush type with a very high impasto effect or 3D visual "illusion."

So this doesn't necessarily have to veer into sculpting/3D modelling.

If the thick impasto settings could give more thickness, that'd already be something. But I thought it'd be cool to have it as a separate brush tool.

Here's how palette knife brushes interact with the "paint". It looks cool, but the appearance of it all isn't as good as Rebelle for sure!

I know Artrage, I have a copy.

The thick color of the pictures you posted first is
not possible in Artrage either.

But, a Impasto like in Artrage should also be
possible in Rebelle.

Here is an online tool where you can play around with
thick paint. It is even possible to place a light source.
It is called "Vervette" and is the online version of "Verve",
a painting program from the developer Taron.
(it have also a fluid simulation, look at some youtube videos)

In principle it is possible in 3D programs to deform
a 3D plane using a grayscale image (heightmap).
The lighter the gray, the greater the deformation.
In this way it could possibly be faked. But the Results
will not be fine in any case.

Here is a little Tool made from Epthracy the Dev
of "Macigavoxel" call "AerialLod" which will do that.

At first you choose a picture for the height deforming
the program uses little cubes or polygons to do that.
Then choose a picture for the color texture.

Here is the "AerialLod" (PC, only) link.

Thank you for the link @2dpainter! Checking it out now.

Yeah, you're right, the thickness in the photos definitely can't be matched even with the tube tool in Artrage. I realise now that using the photos as an example kind of misdirects what I was trying to say.

Perhaps what I wish to get in terms of impasto thickness/height is already possible and I'm just personally struggling to achieve it. Would you have any tips on how to get that thick, sharp black shadow around the edges that gives the visual illusion of very high impasto?

I play around with the shapes and thick/high impasto settings, but still can't get there.

When I wrote that an impasto like in Artrage
would also be possible in Rebelle, I didn't mean
that it already exists in Rebelle.

Rather, in my opinion it would be technically possible
if the developers would implement it.

So, maybe refine your wish a bit like "a impasto like in Artrage"
+1 for that from me for sure already

But if the Escape Motion staff read your post,
I'm sure they know what you would like

Because even more Rebelle users have been missing
this for quite some time
