Mysterious Icon

Well this is the third tie I'm entering my problem. It is not cear how to enter this into the list of questions. 

I am a new user and feeling my way along slowly. Today a large icon appeared completely obscuring my cursor. It was white, shaped like an eye covered by an X.  I quit Rebelle and the next time I opened the file it had disappeared.Please tell me what it is, how I caused it and how to get rid of it next time it showed up.

The icon you are describing indicates that the layer you are working on is hidden. Go to the Layers panel and click the Eye next to the Layer "unhide" it.
